What Your Enneagram Type Says About the Essential Oils You Need

We had some great questions on Instagram the other day–you wanted to know what your Enneagram type says about the essential oils you need. I LOVE this question, and I can’t wait to dive in.

I feel that once you know what your Enneagram type says about the essential oils you need, you’re so much more empowered to achieve the whole-hearted, full sense of wellness the Enneagram is known for.

Below, I share more information on the Enneagram (the Ennea-what?), including how to know your type, how to get the most out of the best essential oil for your Enneagram type, and (of course) some wildly helpful oils for each of the nine Enneagram types to help you tap into your superpowers and find healing!

We’ve got tons of great information to cover, so let’s get started.

What is the Enneagram and Why Do I Need to Know My Type?

The Enneagram is a tool that’s been around since ancient times. Lots of people like to compare it to personality assessments like the Meyrs-Briggs, but that’s not entirely accurate. The Enneagram is less about understanding yourself and others better (though that can certainly take place) and more about finding healing and uncovering layers of shame and repression so that you can flourish and be a gift to the world.

Sounds pretty great, right? It is!

There are nine basic numbers or types which are represented on a wheel–no number or type is better than another, and all are connected and related in powerful ways.

How Do I Know What My Enneagram Type Is?

Nobody can tell you what your type is–that’s completely up to you. You can use online tests (like this one), but most Enneagram experts will tell you that the best way to learn your type is to read the descriptions and find out which one resonates with you the most. This can take time and study, but it’s worth the work. Even if it’s just so you can learn what your Enneagram type says about the essential oils you need ;).

Tips for Learning What Your Enneagram Type Says About the Essential Oils You Need

Once you learn what your Enneagram type says about the essential oils you need, you’ll be eager to put your knowledge into action! Here are three quick ways to get the most out of your essential oils:

1. Inhale

Aromatherapy is powerful. Whether you’re using oils to help you fall asleep quickly at night or to help you relax or focus, using them in a diffuser is a great way to enjoy the best essential oils for your Enneagram type.

You can simply open an essential oil bottle and inhale deeply several times, or use a diffuser. If you’re using a diffuser, use 3-5 drops of essential oils per 100mL.

2. Apply

My favorite way to use essential oils for your Enneagram type is to apply them using an essential oil roller bottle.

I find that this is a great way to save money since roller bottles help stretch my oil dollars, but it’s also a great way to help me remember to use my oils, and to make using them easy. If I have a cute roller bottle already made up in my purse, I’m so much more likely to reach for it during the day!

To create an Enneagram type essential roller bottle, drop 10-15 drops of your recommended essential oil into a roller bottle, and fill the remaining space with fractionated coconut oil or other carrier oil (like jojoba oil or sweet almond oil).

3. Combine With Crystals

Crystals are tons of fun, absolutely beautiful, and perfect for pairing with the Enneagram and with essential oils. We were one of the first internet shops to make gemstone roller tops available on essential oil rollers, and me AND my customers have been in love with them ever since!

You can choose crystals you love, or look for specific crystals by need. You can also check out this guide I wrote for our Whimsy + Wellness community about pairing crystals and essential oils.

The Best Essential Oils for Your Enneagram Type

1. Type One–the Idealist

Ones are principled, disciplined idealists. They tend to excel at what they put their hand to because they value excellence. Their superpower is helping the rest of us be excellent, too, and fighting for a better, more just world, but they have a very harsh inner critic.

If you’re a One, ylang ylang can help you tap into your superpowers and release your tight grip on control by both focusing and relaxing at the same. It can help you “get out of your head” and bring wholeness to your entire self, not just your mind.

Frankincense is another terrific essential oil for use with the Enneagram–especially for type Ones. It’s been in use since ancient times and helps with emotional support and is often used during meditation and prayer. Try it if you’re feeling disconnected from your physical self and want to feel centered and loved.

2. Type Two–the Helper

Twos are easy to spot because they’re always helping people. In fact, they can become too focused on other people, using service as a way to validate their own selves.

Rose and lavender can help a Two recognize and name their own needs, becoming much healthier and whole-hearted.

Rose, especially, is one of my favorite choices for Twos since it is an expensive oil–every time you use it, remember that you are worthy and precious!

Lavender reminds us of spas and relaxation and helps Twos refocus on their own wellness and self-acceptance, instead of using service to avoid fears of rejection.

3. Type Three–the Achiever

Threes have to fight the lie that their worth is tied to their achievements and productivity. It’s an easy lie for a Three to fall into, however, because Threes tend to be incredibly productive. These are people who have already reached their next big goal before the rest of us are out of bed in the morning!

When it comes to what your Enneagram type says about the essential oils you need, I love to recommend Palo Santo and Lavender for Threes.

Palo Santo is related to myrrh and frankincense and is believed to have spiritually cleansing properties. If you’re a Three, Palo Santo can help you reconnect to your inner child and your soul’s true longings, instead of trying to measure up to society’s ideals for your life.

Lavender can help Threes calm and relax–and sleep well at night!–all things that are necessary for both tapping into their superpowers and finding the time during the day to connect with themselves.

4. Type Four–the Individualist

Type Fours are known for being creative, in part because they’re so in touch with their feelings. They can be honest with and about their emotions and tend to be very self-aware emotionally, but along with that comes the tendency for Fours to feel swallowed up by their feelings.

When depression, heavy melancholy, self-pity, or other emotional states become too all-consuming for Fours, neroli oil and grapefruit oil are perfect oils to reach for.

Neroli is a superpower oil that interacts with the limbic system, the part of the brain that controls the nervous system. As such, neroli helps to enhance mood and calm stress, two common complaints for Fours. It’s also a unique oil that can stimulate creativity!

Citrus oils are known for their ability to fight depression and increase energy, and Fours often gravitate towards grapefruit oil for these reasons.

5. Type Five–the Investigator

Fives, in contrast to Fours, are sometimes called unemotional or reclusive. They are highly cerebral types who excel at logic and rational thinking. We need Fives for their cool, calm presence, but Fives can often feel out of touch with themselves and others. And, like Fours, Fives can struggle with feeling like they don’t have enough energy.

Sweet orange and patchouli are two great essential oils for this Enneagram type.

Sweet orange’s wild citrus aroma can help with feelings of low energy and even depression, while patchouli, an earthy essential oil, can help you feel more grounded and connected to those around you and relieve feelings of anxiety, depression, and stress.

6. Type Six–the Loyalist

Some experts believe Type Sixes are the most common of all the Enneagram types. This is probably a good thing, since a Sixes’ loyal, faithful commitment keeps the rest of us secure and safe!

Sixes can struggle with anxiety and depression and value security, so if you’re a Six and you are deciding what your Enneagram type says about the essential oils you need, I recommend lavender and sandalwood

Lavender has been proven to ease feelings of anxiety and depression. It’s also a powerful sleep aid (I love to use it in deep sleep diffuser blends, like the ones listed here). If you struggle with insomnia or restlessness, try lavender!

Sandalwood is also a great choice for Sixes. Sandalwood, like lavender, has calming properties that can lead to a greater sense of security, relaxation, and peace.

7. Type Seven–the Enthusiast

Life would be pretty boring with this Enneagram type! Type Sevens are known for their zest for life, their spontaneity, and their ability to be the life of any good party. Their superpower is helping the rest of us remember to enjoy all that life has to offer, but they can also become unhealthy if they don’t take the time to work through the hard or boring parts of life.

Peppermint and bergamot are two great oils for Sevens. Peppermint can help increase focus and invigorate, helping a Seven tap into his or her superpowers and feel great (it’s also a natural analgesic, easing pain).

Sevens can become like self-critical Ones when they’re stressed or unhealthy, and bergamot oil can help by lifting the mood and releasing negative feelings of inadequacy and insecurity.

8. Type Eight–the Challenger

Nobody leads quite like an Eight; this Enneagram type is uniquely able to take the bull by the horns! Eights, like Ones, can be incredible champions of justice, but they also struggle with a need to control others and can have a hard time being “in the moment.” Vetiver and marjoram are two great essential oils for this Enneagram type.

Vetiver soothes feelings of anger and irritability, emotions Eights can feel often, while also promoting a sense of balance and calm. It can even have a sedative effect, helpful for Eights who feel overwhelmed and have a difficult time sleeping or resting.

Marjoram is a calming oil much like chamomile, and it’s also thought by some cultures to protect the heart. People can often think of Eights as “prickly” or unapproachable, but Eights are usually simply trying to protect themselves, and marjoram can help release this need.

9. Type Nine–the Peacemaker

Like Sixes and Twos, Nines are an Enneagram type that play a vital role in helping other types feel accepted and secure. Nines do this through their conflict-solving abilities. They’re able to see both sides of an issue and value peace, and will work to help achieve it. Nines struggle, however, to not get lost in other people’s hopes and dreams and opinions, and to find their own energy and opinion instead of relying on others.

The two best essential oils for this Enneagram type are wild orange and petitgrain. Wild orange is an energizing citrus oil that can help ward off depression and fear or worry. Nines can use it to increase feelings of joy and peace, even when the world around them seems bleak.

Petitgrain is a calming, balancing oil. It’s sometimes used by Ones and Sevens when their loud inner critics are taking over, but it can also be used by Nines to promote quiet and confidence when they feel that other people’s voices are too loud.
