Your Ultimate Chemical-Free Spring-Cleaning Checklist (+free download!)

Chemical- Free Spring Cleaning Check list

With spring upon us and all of us spending more time at home than ever, a deep clean may be just what we need to spark fresh life into the monotony of quarantine. While few of us may enjoy the process of a deep annual clean (unless you’re a Type 1 on the Enneagram!) the feeling of clean windows and cabinets free of sticky jam is completely worth it.

Spring Cleaning Checklist - Download

Today I thought it would be fun to walk through an ultimate chemical-free spring cleaning checklist together. We’ve got a printable checklist with recipe for you, too, right here that you can download for free! It walks you through how to deep clean each room in your home with toxic-free cleaning supplies, perfect if you’re detoxifying your home or just trying to use more natural products.

Feel free to adjust it for your own home’s layout and start in the room that motivates you the most. Grab your rubber gloves, your glass spray bottles, your happy home labels and your essential oils and let’s get started!

1. Get Your Arsenal of Cleaning Supplies Ready!

Before you jump into battle, spend some time taking inventory of what cleaning supplies you already have on hand and what you will need to add.

Chemical- Free Supply List
  • A good eco-friendly mop with a machine-washable cover – we love THIS one and THIS one.
  • Reusable spray bottles – we love THESE Spray Bottles from Whimsy +Wellness.
  • Labels for your reusable spray bottles like THESE!
  • Citrusy essential oils, such as Lemon, Lime, and Tangerine
  • White Vinegar
  • An all-purpose cleanser – recipe down below
  • Plant-based sponges
  • Duster or microfiber cloths
  • Bee’s wax or other natural furniture polish
  • Mild dishwashing detergent

2. Dust and/or Wipe Everything Down

You can use the hose attachment on your vacuum, a damp microfiber cloth with an all-purpose cleanser, or a feather duster. You want to start at the top and work your way down. Go room to room, pop in earbuds, and listen to a book on audio or a podcast while you tackle this chore in chunks. Make sure you cover:

  • fans and light fixtures
  • windows and blinds
  • doors and door frames
  • light switches and door handles
  • cabinets
  • shelves and tables
  • decor (frames, trays, bowls, figurines, etc.)
  • baseboards

Chemical Free All Purpose Cleaner Recipe

Chemical- Free All Purpose Cleaner

INGREDIENTS

  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • 1 ¾ cups water
  • 30 drops essential oils

ESSENTIAL OIL COMBOS

  • 15 drops each of Lavender and Lemon
  • 10 drops each of Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Orange
  • 15 drops each Grapefruit and your favorite Immune Blend (such as Thieves or On-Guard)

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Add all ingredients to 16 ounce spray bottle.
  • Shake thoroughly. Spritz on surfaces and wipe clean.

3. Vacuum or Sweep

You’ll vacuum twice; this time it’s to get up all the sediment that’s on the ground now that you’ve dusted!

Smelling fresh like lemons and lavender already?

Good! Let’s keep going!

4. Clean Upholstered Furniture

Take removable cushions from furniture outside and beat to let the dust out. If there are stains (hello, kids!) check the care labels for wash methods. Use the hose or upholstery attachment on your vacuum to clear out the nasty stuff under those couch cushions and corners. Or is it just me that has kids that store their leftover cereal within my furniture crevices?!

5. Check Smoke Detectors

This only takes a minute, but is so important! Go through your house and change the batteries in your smoke detectors (this should be done twice a year) and check to make sure the units are free of dust and working properly.

6. Polish Wood Furniture

Something about polishing wood furniture reminds me of my grandparents and how carefully they took care of their things. To polish wood furniture, first wipe down surfaces with damp cloth. Using a cotton cloth folded into a couple layers apply polish, such as Bee’s Wax. (This wax can also be used on marble, granite, glass, stainless steel and leather.)

7. Wash Windows and Drapes

It’s nice to get those windows squeaky clean to let the sunshine in! First, take the drapes down and check care labels. Many window treatments can be machine washed while you’re tackling the rest of the window screens and blinds.

Wipe down wood/metal/vinyl blinds with a damp cloth and a mixture of warm water and a mild dishwashing detergent.

Using warm water and mild dishwashing soap (or the all-purpose cleaner up above) spray window screens and scrub with a brush till clean.

Clean glass with non-toxic glass cleaner below.

Non-Toxic Glass Cleaner

Chemical- Free Glass Cleaner
  • 2 cups of water (distilled or filtered is best so it doesn’t leave residue)
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 10 drops essential oil of choice – I use lemon (optional- but it helps cut the vinegar smell)

8. Deep Clean Floors

I feel like clean floors are the gateway to a clean house. It’s the keystone habit that unlocks other good habits and those citrusy oils I use make me feel like I can tackle the world that day (or another day in quarantine!) My advice is to invest in a good mop if you have a lot of square footage not covered in carpet. This is the one I have that I love, but I’m also thinking about investing in THIS one for a quicker clean of all of the hardwoods in our home. After mopping, you’ll want to do that last, final vacuum.

Hardwood Floor Cleaner Recipe

Chemical- Free Floor Cleaner

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 gallon hot water
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ¼ cup non-toxic concentrate cleaner (Thieves from YL or On-Guard from Doterra)
  • 3-5 drops Orange EO or Pine EO

DIRECTIONS:
Add the above together in a bucket. Using a soft cleaning cloth, soak the cloth into the water, ring excess water, and wash a small 4×4 section of floor. Immediately wipe dry with a soft cloth and move to the next section of flooring.

A note on rugs…

When doing a deep clean, go the extra step to remove your rugs and mop the floors underneath. You can also shampoo your rugs yourself if they are synthetic or backed with a waterproof backing. Use a rotary shampoo machine or a hot-water extraction machine. If your rugs are made of wool or do not have a waterproof backing, they need to be professionally cleaned.

A note on tile…

Grout in between tiles wears down and becomes stained easily, especially if it wasn’t sealed properly. Did you know you can reseal your grout?! Use THIS tutorial to learn what and how to apply sealer to grout with a small foam brush. Promise, it’s easy!

9. Prep Your Diffusers & Crystals

This step is completely optional, but it makes the hippie in me so happy! I like to prep a few dropper bottles and a pretty glass pitcher or bottle with oil blends already to go, so that all I have to do is add oils + water to my diffusers and turn them on (we have TONS of great recipes here, but if you’d like lots of ideas in one place, check out our book full of DIY recipes, including even more cleaning recipes!).

I also like to arrange crystals around my house near my diffusers to help encourage positive energy (and just to make me smile!). You can learn more about how I got started with crystals here, or download a free healing crystals chart here.

10. Prop Your Feet Up and Enjoy Your Clean House!

This step is my favorite ;).
