Raise your hand if you got eight or nine hours of peaceful, happy sleep last night and woke up feeling refreshed. Anybody? Anybody? You’re not alone! The National Sleep Foundation reports most women get far less than the recommended eight hours of sleep a night–and I understand why!
If it’s not little ones keeping me up, it’s my mind racing with work or anxiety, random body aches or pains, hormones going haywire, or just plain ‘ol insomnia. And if I’m sick or my kids are sick–forget about it!
How Deep Sleep Diffuser Blends Can Help You
Fortunately, I have essential oils. These little bottles contain some powerful properties–many of which have been used for thousands of years and have been studied extensively by modern medicine. I’m sharing some of my favorite oils and deep sleep diffuser blends below.
These deep sleep diffuser blends can:
- Calm anxiety
- Soothe a racing mind
- Help you relax after a stressful day
- Ease body aches and pains
- Help you fall into deep sleep quickly
- Limit wakeups at night
- Help with breathing and pain if you’re sick
Does Diffusing Lavender Help You Sleep?
Yes! Studies have found lavender can help with anxiety, postpartum depression, insomnia, and more–basically all of the things keeping you from feeling great in the morning. Lavender is one of my favorite oils because it’s so easy to use, it smells amazing, it pairs beautifully with other oils, and it has so many uses.
However, it’s not the only oil I like to use in a deep sleep diffuser blend!
Best Essential Oil Blends for Sleep Without Lavender?
Here are a few more oils besides lavender to turn to for sleep problems:
- Cedarwood has a sedative effect as well as an anti-anxiety effect. It has a wonderful, woodsy scent that makes a great base for lighter, more floral scents.
- Valerian is sometimes called “nature’s Valium”–it’s been used for thousands of years to help with insomnia.
- Neroli oil is made from the flowers of the bitter orange tree. It helps reduce pain, discomfort, and anxiety, and has even been proven to help reduce pain and anxiety for women in labor.
- Ylang ylang comes from a plant native to the Philippines and Indonesia. It is very high in linalool, which is thought to influence the limbic system (the nervous system) to calm stress levels, high blood pressure, and high heart rates.
- Roman chamomile–the same herb you might be sipping in your tea every night–has been used to help promote sleep since ancient times but even today, people who use chamomile sleep significantly better than people who don’t!

Here are all the oils you can use to create deep sleep diffuser blends:

How Much Deep Sleep Diffuser Blend Should I Use?
We reccomend using about 3-5 drops of oil per 100mL of water, but always double check your diffuser’s instructions!
So, let’s say you have a large diffuser that holds 500mL of water–you can use as many as 15-25 drops of essential oils (though you can adjust down if you want).
Can You Sleep With an Aromatherapy Diffuser On?
Yes, as long as your diffuser has an automatic shutoff when it runs out of water. Some diffusers also have timers so they turn off after a certain amount of time.
If you don’t want to diffuse essential oils for sleep, you can check out this post for learning how to roll on oils for sleep topically!
How Do You Use Calming Sleep Blend Oils?
Deep sleep diffuser blends are extremely versatile. You can:
- make up your own diffuser blend ahead of time and store in a dropper bottle, like this limited edition bottle
- make a lovey spray or linen spray to use for yourself or your little ones just before bed
- dilute with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil and use a DIY roller to make your own roll on blend (simply roll on the bottom of your feet, the inside of your wrists, and/or your temple right before bed)
- use in the bath for a relaxing soak before bed
- pair with crystals for extra help sleeping
Tips for Making Your Own Deep Sleep Diffuser Blends
There’s no right or wrong way to combine oils when you’re making your own deep sleep diffuser blends, but you do want to make sure you avoid oils like rosemary that will have an invigorating effect. Basically, if it smells good to you and you start to feel relaxed as soon as you smell it, it’s doing its job.
