“There’s an oil for that!” is a saying you may hear while waiting in the carpool line, meeting for book club, or while scrolling through your Instagram feed. But if you’re new to essential oils, you may be wondering how to actually use an oil in your daily life.
Roller bottles are one of the easiest ways to tap into the many benefits of essential oils. Some of our favorite essential oil roller bottle blends here at Whimsy + Wellness are for common ailments such as headaches, insomnia, and hormonal imbalances, but there are endless ways to use your roller bottles. Today I’m going to walk you through how to make a roller bottle and some of our favorite uses for them.
Why Use Roller Bottles?
Because essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts (and the higher the quality of the oils the more potent they become) it’s not always safe to apply the oils directly to your skin.
One of the gentlest ways to apply essential oils (and still get all of those great benefits) is to dilute the oils with a carrier oil and put them into a roller bottle for topical use. A roller bottle typically contains 1-3% of essential oils and then the rest of the bottle is filled with a carrier oil like almond, fractionated coconut, or jojoba. You can find our favorite carrier oil HERE.
The roller top on a roller bottle allows the oils to distribute evenly when you roll onto your pulse points. We have tested so many roller tops and have found that glass and/or gemstone are the best quality and provide the smoothest application. Bonus! The gemstones have additional healing properties.
How Do I Know How Many Oils To Add To A Roller Bottle?
Although every person is different, there are some general dilution guidelines to follow depending on age, skin sensitivity, and intended use. Always do your research on the specific oil you’ll be using, as some oils like oregano are considered “hot” to the skin and can cause a burning sensation if it’s not diluted properly. Most oils follow these general dilution guidelines…
Here’s what you’ll need to make a roller bottle with essential oils!
- 5ml or 10ml glass roller bottle (we love THESE and THESE)
- Essential Oils (see our favorite blends below)
- Carrier Oil (we love THIS one)
STEP ONE: pour essential oils into roller bottle. Roller bottles typically come in 2 sizes: 5ml and 10ml. Adjust quantities as needed. See above chart for general dilution guidelines.
STEP TWO: Fill the rest of the roller bottle with carrier oil. Fractionated coconut oil is pictured above and is one of our favorites!
STEP THREE: Secure the roller top in place. We love this leopard jasper gemstone roller top in the Dunes Collection.
STEP FOUR: Your roller bottle is ready to use! Simply roll the roller bottle on pulse points…temples, inside of wrists, on the bottoms of the feet, behind the neck and down the spine.

Our Favorite Roller Bottle Blends
We send recipe cards with all of our roller bottles at Whimsy + Wellness. We’ve rounded up a few of our faves for 10ml roller bottles and are dropping them below for you to use! If you have a favorite, be sure to share it down below in the comments!
We like to keep our roller bottles close so we’ll be reminded to use them daily. Think about storing your rollers near the kitchen sink, in your diaper bag/purse, or, on the nightstands next to your bed.
Stay well and happy rolling!
