9 Essential Oils for Fertility
When it comes to fertility, essential oils are super helpful for several reasons.
First, they’ve been studied often, and with great results.
In many cases, we have scientific evidence that they’re working! But even before modern scientific methods were developed, most of these oils (and the plants they came from) were being used traditionally by people groups all over the world. There’s sometimes thousands of years of collective wisdom behind some of these essential oils.
But that’s not all!
While many of these oils help to destress and calm us (stress plays a huge role in fertility), they also help to reduce our toxic load, which can also play a role in fertility.
Finally, most of these oils, in addition to their specific benefits, also help with stress and anxiety, both of which can significantly influence fertility.
Here are our favorite fertility essential oils:
1. Clary Sage (great for balancing hormones)
Clary sage is one of the most popular oils for women’s health, especially when it comes to balancing hormones. It comes from a type of sage plant that’s grown in the Mediterranean and some parts of Africa and Asia.
It has a bitter, herby scent and its oils have been shown to potentially help balance estrogen hormones.
If it’s the only fertility oil you ever reach for, it’s a great choice!
2. Ylang Ylang (great for libido and mental health)
The ylang ylang tree grows flowers that are used in Indonesia on a couple’s wedding bed. That should give you a clue about its traditional use!
Ylang ylang essential oil is a real powerhouse oil; it works to alleviate stress, increase focus, and can be an aphrodisiac.
It may also help with mental health, which can both affect fertility and be affected by fertility problems.
3. Rose Otto (great for PCOS)
Rose otto essential oil is steam distilled from the Damask Rose.
Not only does it smell lovely (it’s one of Haylee’s favorites; she uses it in her Mamas blend), but it’s known for being able to help with everything from blood pressure to immune function to stress levels!
We love it for helping to boost mood, enhance relaxation, and help with anxiety and depression.
Finally, rose otto has also been proven to help with menstrual cramps and migraines, both of which can be a result of PCOS, which can cause infertility.
4. Geranium (great for balancing blood sugar/endocrine system)
Geranium is another floral essential oil with powerful fertility benefits.
Geranium is believed to help balance the endocrine system, the system of hormones that regulate fertility and are heavily involved in the process of conception.
It may do this, in part, by helping to balance blood sugar (geranium has been traditionally used to treat high blood sugar in Tunisia). Geranium essential oil may also help with inflammation, anxiety, and depression.
5. Sandalwood (great for boosting libido and/or testosterone)
Sandalwood essential oil comes from the sandalwood tree, an ancient tree that’s been significant in both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines.
Sandalwood may be able to boost libido and/or testosterone in men, and it may act as an aphrodisiac for women.
It’s also used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to help with abdominal pain due to energy stagnation, and in Ayurvedic medicine to help with low libido, fatigue, anxiety, and many other problems.
6. Lavender (great for lowering cortisol)
Yes, we have a book in our shop called Beyond Lavender, but don’t sleep on this incredible oil!
It smells lovely and has approximately 84,384,405 uses, but it’s especially relevant to fertility, since it may also help to lower cortisol levels in the body.
Cortisol is the stress hormone, and when it’s unnaturally high, it can wreak havoc on the entire body, but especially the endocrine system (ie, it can hugely impact fertility).
You can use lavender as a sleep aid, but also diffuse it during the day to help you release negativity and stress.
7. Myrrh (great for regulating cycles)
While lavender is relatively inexpensive, myrrh is a different story. It’s a sacred, somewhat rare oil, that has been used since ancient times.
It has an earthy, musky scent, and it’s known for supporting skin and oral health, killing parasites and bacteria, and so much more, but it may also be able to help combat pain and swelling (such as menstrual pain) and may also help to regulate menstrual cycles and clear the path for conception.
8. Chamomile (great for relaxation)
Chamomile is extremely gentle and kind (if you’re new to oils or uncomfortable with using them, it’s a great place to start!).
The herb itself is considered safe to drink during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and the oil can help with fertility by reducing inflammation, lowering and stabilizing blood sugar levels (which can be tied to PCOS, a condition that deeply impacts fertility), reducing menstrual pain, and assisting with sleep and rest.
9. Satureja Khuzestanica (may improve sperm fertility rates)
This is an oil that’s going to be more difficult to find, even though it’s from a plant related to rosemary and thyme.
There are many promising studies, however, suggesting it may help improve sperm fertility rates in men.
How Do You Use Essential Oils for Fertility?
There are a few different ways you can use fertility essential oils.
Here are some of our favorites:
1. Make a Roller Bottle
To make a roller bottle, simply add the essential oils you want to an empty roller bottle (you can use our recipes below, or make a single-oil blend by using the dilution chart below).
Then, top with a carrier oil, like fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil. Replace the roller ball and you’re all set.
You can roll the oil on your lower back, abdominal area, on the inside of your wrists, or the bottom of your feet several times a day.
Many holistic fertility experts recommend inhaling the oil deeply while resting for 10 minutes or so once a day.
Similar to meditation, this gentle ritual can enhance relaxation, help you destress, and help your body fully absorb the essential oil benefits.
2. Fertility Massage
You can use any of the above essential oils to make your own fertility massage oil (or use one of the blends we’ve included below!), and massage into your lower back and abdominals.
Or, you and your partner can massage each other using the blend!
3. Diffuse
You can diffuse any of the oils we’ve mentioned above!
Just drop your oils into your diffuser, add distilled water, and turn it on! You can diffuse throughout the day, or at night while you sleep.
Here’s our handy dilution chart, so you know how many drops of oils to use (though always follow your manufacturer’s directions!):
Don’t have a diffuser? That’s ok! Here are some great options to diffuse oils throughout the day.
4. Inhale
One of the simplest ways to use essential oils for fertility is to simply place a few drops on your hands, and rub them together.
Cup them and hold them to your face while you breathe deeply for several moments. This is a beautiful breath exercise to practice several times a day!
Ok! We’ve talked about essential oils for fertility; now, let’s chat about crystals for fertility!
Which Crystals are Best for Fertility?
Just like essential oils, crystals have been used traditionally by ancient cultures to help with all kinds of problems–and definitely with fertility.
Here are some of our favorite crystal for fertility:
1. Moonstone
Moonstone is this really stunningly beautiful crystal–it looks like crystalized moonbeams! It’s a deeply calming, soothing stone, and it’s also believed to be a very feminine stone, aligned with the moon’s natural energy and force.
Crystal practitioners will place moonstones outside during a full moon to charge them, and then use it to help balance hormones and calm the spirit.
In Chinese medicine, the moonstone is also used to help specifically with conception. Here’s a roller bottle with moonstone already inside.
2. Carnelian
Carnelian is a creativity stone that’s known for invigorating both the mind and the body, and inspiring tremendous creativity. It makes sense, then, that it would be an important crystal for fertility!
Carnelian is also known for being helpful for uterine and reproductive health. You can look to it for support while trying to conceive, while pregnant, and during postpartum.
3. Jade
Jade is considered good luck in many cultures, and it makes sense when you see or hold it: it has very cooling, protective, charming vibes.
It’s a popular choice for fertility because of its ability to calm and destress, but it’s also known for helping to increase blood flow and oxygen throughout the pelvis, and bringing back balance to emotions (and body systems) that are out of whack.
4. Rose Quartz
Rose quartz is the love stone, which of course makes it great for fertility!
Rose quartz is about unconditional love; it’s also a heart opener that can help you move into acceptance and self-forgiveness, and away from guilt or shame. These self-love qualities are important if you’re trying to conceive!
This set contains both rose quartz and aventurine.
5. Aventurine
Green aventurine is this really soothing, beautiful stone. It’s intense green color gives us a clue about its purpose: it’s a stone of abundance and life!
It can also be very protective, helping you find a more stable sense of harmony and peace if you’re working through any emotional challenges as you prepare to conceive or you’re trying to conceive.
6. Hematite
Hematite is very deep red thanks to its makeup: it’s mostly iron, which, coincidentally, is what gives our blood its red color.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, hematite is used to help anchor the blood and energy (qi) down towards the pelvis. This can help unblock reproductive organs, and encourage more regular menstrual cycles. Hematite is extremely grounding as a crystal, and it’s been used for centuries as a fertility talisman.
This set contains both moonstone and hematite.
How Do I Use Crystals for Fertility?
We talk more in depth here about how to use crystals, but here are a few suggestions for using the crystals we’ve just mentioned:
- Keep them around where you can see them often (a nightstand, the kitchen table, your bathroom counter, etc.)
- Choose one and set a daily intention towards fertility
- Use them with your essential oils
- Place them by your diffuser, so you’re reminded to breathe deep and set an intention whenever you see them
- Use one for meditation: hold in your hand while you meditate
- Wear crystals as jewelry
- Use a crystal as a pocket stone–slip one into you pocket so you can rub it whenever you feel anxious or stressed
