We’re kicking off our Crystallize the Rainbow series, where we’re combining the fascinating world of color theory with crystals and their properties.
Red is the color of energy, passion, pleasure, and confidence. It stands for power, action, vitality, sexuality, and excitement. As an emotionally intense color, red demands attention and is incredibly stimulating. It’s all about stability and bringing your dreams to life.
Similarly, red crystals embody these powerful attributes as well, serving as potent allies in our journey towards self-discovery and fulfillment. Red crystals echo the energies we see with the color red, but each with their own unique flair!

Even as a crystal shop owner, it can be really hard even for me to remember the exact properties of any given crystal. What REALLY helped me, was learning and memorizing general color theory and then applying that to crystals. You can of course get specific with each red crystal’s properties (which I’ll put below for those of you who like to learn allll the details about crystals) but if you’re wanting to keep it simple and easy to remember – when you see a red crystal, know that it’ll likely contain properties of red color theory that I mentioned above.

Red Crystal Properties
Here are a few red crystals with their specific beloved properties; and no surprise here, you’ll notice the common theme among them all tying back to red color theory. 🤩

Red + The Chakras
Let’s explore the wonderful world of RED via the chakra system, which beautifully intertwines color theory and crystal properties. The chakra system originated in ancient India and while there is some discrepancy of how old the system is, we know it’s around 4,000 years old!
What’s a chakra?
Imagine your body as an energy playground filled with spinning wheels of color, consciousness, and power. These are your chakras; your personal energy centers that come in a rainbow spectrum of seven main wheels.
Starting from the base of your pelvis and traveling all the way up to the crown of your head, each chakra is like its own mini-brain, with its own set of superpowers. They’re not stacked in a hierarchy; instead, they work together as a team, governing every aspect of your life. From your physical well-being to your emotional state and even your psychology, these chakras are the ultimate power squad within you.
The Root Chakra
With this week being red week, we’re focusing in on the chakra that resonates with and is symbolized by the color red . . .
Your root chakra is the foundation stone of your energetic house, located at the base of your pelvis. Just like the color red symbolizes passion, vitality, and grounding in color theory, the root chakra is all about providing stability, security, and a sense of belonging in your life. It’s your anchor to the physical world, governing your basic needs, survival instincts, and connection to family and home.
When focusing on our chakras, the goal is to have them balanced. Sometimes a chakra can be energy deficient and sometimes that same chakra could have too much energy. While lots of energy may sound like a good thing, we actually don’t want an overactive chakra! If one has too much energy it means it’s compensating for something. So we want to make sure all chakras are balanced and in alignment.
An Energy Deficient Root Chakra
When we’re energy deficient in our root chakra we’re not in the present moment, we are not grounded, we’re caught up in our mind or emotions and are out of touch with the body. We feel threatened and unsteady (just like a tree without roots)
An Overactive Root Chakra
If we have too much root chakra energy or earth energy: our boundaries get over rigid. We’re pushing and keeping people out because we’re too deeply rooted and guarded. We get stuck, depressed, we can’t get into our mind or emotions at all and are completely in the body alone.
An Aligned Root Chakra
When our root chakra is in alignment we feel we have a strong, stable, and reliable foundation. We trust ourselves and those we’re in relationship with and set needed boundaries. We feel confident and able to withstand life’s storms or challenges just like a strong rooted tree.
