How to Know if You’re an Enneagram One
Most experts agree that the best way to learn your Enneagram type is to learn about all the types and decide for yourself which feels most like you. So, you’re in the right place to figure out your type!
Enneagram Type Ones are often the most obvious Enneagram types to spot: they are mature, responsible rule-followers who (for good or bad) are always right. If you’re fortunate enough to know a Type One as a child, you’ll know they’re pretty much full-grown adults by the time they’re twelve!
You’ll often find Type Ones in settings where morality is important; some believe a large portion of ministers and pastors are Ones.
The Enneagram Type One Basic Fear
Ones are driven by a very deep fear of being wrong; they instinctively believe that if they’re wrong, they’re not worthy. Ones fight to achieve worthiness by being right all the time. If you think that sounds exhausting, you’d be correct! They have a fierce inner critic that never stops–if you experience a One’s criticism, you can be sure they’ve been much more critical with themselves.
Ones can also be very controlling and uncompromising (but not in a good way), thanks to their need to make sure everything goes “perfect.”
The Enneagram Type One Strengths
Because Ones are so focused on rightness, they excel at catching mistakes and seeing errors. If quality and a high degree of perfection matters, you need a One on your team!
Ones also do a tremendous job at envisioning a better, more ideal system or way of being–they’ve thought about it a LOT. Healthy Ones can really move a group to want better, and they usually have a plan for getting there.
Ones are also highly motivated to fight against injustice. Truly, Ones make the world a better place!
How Do I Become a Healthy Enneagram 1?
Ones become healthy when they learn to validate their own worth apart from their rightness or perfection. When they’re able to spot patterns of disintegration and stress and find healthier behaviors, they become truly delightful humans. Instead of being controlling and critical, they become principled idealists who reform the world gently and with heart.
To become a healthy Enneagram Type One, you can:
- Learn more about your directions of integration and disintegration so you can spot disruptive patterns
- Find practices like meditation and affirmations that can ground you and help silence that fierce inner critic

What Are the Enneagram Type 1 Patterns of Integration and Disintegration?
Most of the time, the Enneagram is represented as a wheel. This is to show that all types are connected and no type is better or more important than another, but it also is great at showing how types relate to each other.
For example, you’ll notice arrows connecting Type Fours and Type Sevens to Type Ones. This is because a One who is under stress or unhealthy acts like an unhealthy Four–moody and focused on her problems at the exclusion of others.
A healthy One, however, who is growing and becoming more self-aware and integrated becomes more like a healthy Type Seven–spontaneous, creative, and fun!
Essential oils and natural crystals are really beautiful, gentle ways to help a One silence the inner critic, unlock her inner adventurer, and become the beautiful, serene gift to the world that she can be. Here’s how to use them:
Crystals for the Enneagram Type One
Our favorite crystals for Type Ones are:
- Lapis lazuli
- Pink lemurian quartz
- Tangerine quartz

Pink lemurian quartz is a stone that encourages female energies, which are cyclical, enduring, and gentle, as opposed to brutish or controlling. Pink lemurian and chrysocolla can both help a One connect with her spiritual awareness and compassion (something she often forgets to connect to).
Tangerine quartz is known for its creative energy–when a One can stop being afraid of her mistakes, her creative energy will blossom and grow and change the world!
Essential Oils for the Enneagram Type One
Our favorite essential oils for Type Ones are:
- Ylang ylang
Ylang ylang and frankincense are both powerful, intense oils, which is exactly how Type Ones tend to show up to the world. Both oils are terrific at helping to ground a One (she often lives in her head and needs help connecting to her body and her senses).
Ylang ylang has been proven to help combat anxiety (something Ones are known to struggle with), and can help a One snap into focus and relax at the same time.
Frankincense does something similar, but is especially known for its emotional support (it’s been used since ancient times in meditation and prayer).
Affirmations for the Enneagram Type One
These affirmations are beautiful ways to remind yourself of your worth as an Enneagram One, and work toward inner healing (we’ve included several of these in our Enneagram Type One roller bottles)!
